He inspires readers to do the same. On April 1, 1970, Army Green Beret medic Gary Beikirch knew the odds were stacked against his survival. Some 10,000 enemy soldiers sought to obliterate the twelve American Special Forces troops and five hundred South Vietnamese fighters who stood fast to defend the women and children of the militarily strategic region of the Central Highlands. The bloody battle lasted for three weeks. For his valour and selflessness during the siege, Gary was later awarded the Medal of Honor. But Gary returned home wounded in body, mind, and soul. To find himself again, Gary retreated to a cave in the mountains of New England, where a redemptive encounter with God allowed Gary to find peace.
