Exploring New England's Spiritual Heritage

New England is full of history, not least of which is its rich Christian tradition. New England was home to the Great Awakening of the eighteenth century, led by George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards. It also became the headquarters for much of the eighteenth century’s missionary activity around the globe. One could spend a lifetime exploring and still not mine the depths of all this historic region has to offer. Thankfully, Dr. Garth M. Rosell has already done this heavy lifting, and in his Exploring New England’s Spiritual Heritage, he leads his readers through the historical legacy of seven different New England cities. This book is designed as both a historical textbook and travel guidebook built into one. Readers will learn about and be guided through Boston, Ipswich, Newburyport, Salem, Plymouth (Plimoth), Northfield, and Northampton. Each chapter includes detailed maps with numbered points of interest, concise but thorough historical explanation, personal photos by Dr. Rosell, historical facts and figures, a list of titles for further reading on that specific city, and a “Closer Look” section that details specific key events or people related to that location. In addition, this book includes helpful appendices for using the guidebook, planning for and directions to each destination, and suggestions for further reading. As the subtitle suggests, each chapter is intended to be a companion for a daytrip to that location.
