Explore the Bible for Students Leader Guide gives leaders clear direction and support in guiding a group of students through each session.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Bible is how often it is painfully honest about the failures of its “heroes.” First and Second Kings are perhaps the greatest example of this. Some of the very best and very worst times in Israel’s history are found in 1 and 2 Kings—but honestly, the bad often seems to outweigh the good.
While there were a handful of good kings who attempted to turn people’s hearts back to God, the story of 1 and 2 Kings is ultimately one of a nation falling from grace because of their selfish choice to reject the God of their ancestors and embrace the worship of idols instead. Thankfully, however, this isn’t the end of their story. First and Second Kings look forward to future grace and the coming of the one truly good and faithful King, Jesus Christ, who will redeem God’s people and heal their failures.
