"We had no relatives in farming, no interests in the countryside, no connection with animals or nature.” What led a teenager, born and raised in London after the Second World War, to choose a life of farming in the English countryside? And how could he achieve his ambition of managing over a thousand acres? “What you need is ‘buckets of porridge’.” Although he didn’t understand the advice given to him at his initial interview, he soon began to realise that buckets of porridge would be needed every step of the way, as well as several miraculous answers to prayer.
