This translation brings Reinhold Pieper’s German Homiletics textbook, originally published by Concordia Publishing House in 1901, into English. Homiletics was written for biblical preachers generally and Missouri Synod preachers specifically. The resource explores and compiles Lutheran teaching on preaching from the 1500s to the 1900s, most of which is currently inaccessible to most preachers.
The entirety of Pieper’s Homiletics can be boiled down to interpreting and applying the Scriptures. Pieper refers to this as strictly textual preaching. In his opinion, anything outside of Scripture is mere human invention. The book is, therefore, entirely focused on the correct interpretation and application of Scripture as the sole rule and norm of faith and life.
