Mentoring Like Jesus

While the Bible doesn’t directly tell us what mentoring is, it certainly gives examples of what it looks like. The Apostle Paul exhorted Timothy to take all that he had learned from him and to “entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2). Paul encouraged Titus to challenge older women to teach and train the younger women in the church how to love their husbands, children, be self-controlled, pure, etc. (Titus 2:3-5). Jesus, in the pursuit of His mission to “seek and save the lost” (Luke 19:10), focused much of his time on mentoring His disciples. He spent time with His disciples (John 3:22), taught His disciples (Luke 11:1-13), and modeled what He wanted them to learn (John 13:15). The Bible has examples of Christians teaching and training other Christians how to live out all that Jesus taught. This is precisely what it means to mentor. To mentor is to intentionally train other people how to live, love, and glorify Christ.
