Neil Paynter has been a farm labourer, a fruit-picker, a teacher, a security guard (reluctantly), a bookseller, a hospital cleaner, a stand-up comedian, a musician and an editor. The stories he tells here come out of the experience of working in homeless shelters in North America and Britain, as a nurse’’s aide with the elderly and as a mental health worker.
